CU/Nebraska Tailgate

November 27, 2009
10:00 amto1:30 pm
10:00 amto1:30 pm

This Friday renews our annual grudge match with our rivals from Nebraska.  Records are meaningless in this match-up as it’s all for pride.   Kickoff is at 1:30 but the party starts well beforehand.

We get things going at 10:00am.  We have the best tailgating spot in the whole area – a top the parking garage in the SW corner.  Look for our large Young Alumni Banner.  We will have everything you need to get you pumped for the game – Cornhole, beer pong & of course the sounds of our very own – DJ Bobby.

The parking garage is on the corner of Colorado & Regent – just North of Coors Event Center.  Parking costs $20 and has ample space or you can park off site and walk over.

No RSVP needed.  Just show up, have fun, and root on you Buffaloes.  CU Friday!

Power Up Your Portfolio and Ramp Up Your Resume

September 23, 2008
6:00 pmto9:00 pm

Revamp your job search skills and expand your communications knowledge at the Boulder Writers Alliance Expo!

The annual BWA Expo provides a forum where communications professionals can share their expertise and exchange information on a variety of topics, both with each other and with local businesses and research organizations.

Notable experts in the fields of writing, marketing, web design, editing, and graphics gather at the Expo to share and explore new areas of business. Attendees can learn about many different topics, helping them become more diverse communications professionals.

“I think every working professional should share both their expertise and their questions with others in their field. I think the Boulder Writers Alliance allows that to happen for professional writers very well,” said BWA member Bill Holtsnider.

The fourth annual BWA Expo will be at:
Location: The Spice of Life Event Center at 5706 Arapahoe Avenue in Boulder
Date: September 23, 2008
Time: 6 to 9 p.m.
Features: The Expo will feature mini-presentations on communications topics and networking. The event is free for BWA members and students; it costs $5 for non-members.

Presentation topics include Your Job Search: Thinking Outside the Box, How to Build a Portfolio, Tips for Freelancing Success, Create An Audience With Blogging and Other Electronic Media, Overview of Search Engine Optimization (SEO), and Writing Books for Children.

“I believe it is absolutely crucial to be a member of BWA if you are in this industry and live in the area. Not only is BWA a terrific resource for employers and employees, but is also a great venue for sharing information, networking, and learning news skills and products,” said BWA member Heidi Hall.

“I gained new knowledge and many new acquaintances,” Hall said about her experience at past BWA Expos.

“I think the Expo is a great win-win opportunity for everyone who attends. Local businesses get free expert advice on communications problems they are experiencing plus the chance to meet professionals they may later want to hire. Communications experts have the chance to showcase their knowledge and do a little marketing with prospective clients,” explained Mary Headley, one of the Expo organizers.

The 2008 Expo promises to be an outstanding networking opportunity. Attendees are asked to bring their resume, business cards, and any business or professional literature. There will be an information table for attendees to exchange business cards and resumes.

BWA will also offer a book exchange. Bring a book to share and take home a different book to build your library.

The Boulder Writers Alliance (BWA) is a nonprofit organization of more than 100 communications professionals located in Boulder and throughout Colorado. Members specialize in all facets of writing and communications, including technical and marketing writing, fiction and journalism, editing, graphic arts, multimedia, and Web sites. BWA provides education, networking, and marketing opportunities for members, and connects writers with employers through the BWA site at www.bwa.org. To see a list of all the topics being covered, go to http://www.bwa.org/showcase/experts.htm.

Info Box: BWA has started lunch-time “schmoozes,” networking opportunities for BWA members and friends, on the first Friday of the month. Contact membership @ bwa.org to RSVP or for more information.

BWA has initiated a low-cost ($15) volunteer membership option just for students. Any currently enrolled student pursuing a degree in an accredited institution may join BWA by filling out the online membership and specifying the Student Volunteer Membership option. Student applicants will then be contacted by the BWA Membership Chairperson to arrange for a suitable volunteer assignment and introductions.

CU REAL WORLD PROGRAM OPENS DOORS FOR STUDENTS AND YOUNG ALUMNI

September 10, 2008
6:00 pmto8:00 pm

In a challenging economy, college students and recent graduates need essential skills to be competitive in the marketplace.

On Wednesday, Sept. 10, the University of Colorado Alumni Association and Career Services will launch CU Real World, a new series that offers valuable tips for students and young alumni as they prepare for life after college. Led by executive recruiter Kate Carson, the program’s inaugural presentation Interviewing skills: Learn to stand up, speak confidently and not mess up in front of your new boss! will run from 6 p.m. to 7:45 p.m. in the auditorium of the Benson Earth Sciences Building.

“CU Real World focuses learning outside the classroom on real life issues and the resources students need for the next step on the road to their dreams,” says Ron Stump, executive director of the CU-Boulder Alumni Association. “We’re partnering with on-campus experts to enrich students and young alumni knowledge and skills.”

Throughout the year, CU Real World will feature four evening sessions ― two each semester― on a range of topics, including interviewing skills, travel and working abroad, graduate school prep and managing finances. Each CU Real World session is interactive and students participate in mock scenarios.

University officials hope the new program will assist students and young alumni who have yet to confront the realities of pursuing their dreams as professionals. “CU Real World is designed to help new grads and soon-to-be grads with their professional development,” says Lisa Severy, CU-Boulder Career Services director. “We’re excited about partnering with the Alumni Association to offer a glimpse of life after graduation.”

Each event is free and open to all CU students and young alumni. Complimentary pizza and beverages are served. Based in the Koenig Alumni Center at the corner of Broadway and University avenues, the CU-Boulder Alumni Association administers scholarships, awards, online networking opportunities, alumni clubs, a museum and publishes the monthly electronic newsletter Buffalum Notes and the quarterly alumni magazine, the Coloradan.
